Our Telecoms Policy Contributions
UK TELECOMS DIVERSIFICATION TASKFORCE
Prof Dimitra Simeonidou is part of the Telecoms Diversification Taskforce, which was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to provide independent expert advice to the government on the delivery of the Telecoms Supply Chain Diversification Strategy.
Dimitra's input has helped to shape the report with its findings and recommendations for targeted action to meet UK's ambitions available here.
OFCOM'S TECHNOLOGY FUTURES
Prof Mischa Dohler sits on the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board and has been contributing to UK's national policy work since 2016.
Ofcom have recently commissioned a report on Future Technologies, which both Prof Mischa Dohler and Prof Dimitra Simeonidou have contributed to. The report is available here and a video recording of Prof Dohler is available here.
SECURITY OF UK TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Prof Mischa Dohler has contributed to the Security of UK Telecommunications report, procured and published by the UK Parliament.
The report notes that telecommunications networks are essential for the day-to-day running of UK businesses and public services. However, concerns have been raised recently over their security. The report outlines the threats to these networks, the ability of networks to cope with disruption, and possible protective measures.
UK'S TELCO RESEARCH VISION
We have organised two national workshops among all academics in telecoms and networks as well as with the EPSRC to carve out a research agenda for the next years to come. The final report with recommendations can be found here.
The developed roadmap spans wireless access networks, core and transport networks, end-to-end networks and systems. A key conclusion from the process was that increased future co-creation and collaboration will be critical to meaningful progress in communication networks research and industrialization given the ever-increasing system complexities.
FROM 5G TO 6G GOVERNANCE
Together with Cambridge University, Prof Mischa Dohler and Prof Dimitra Simeonidou have developed an in-depth policy paper on the transition from 5G to 6G systems. The 6G policy report is available here.
The report noted that the overall ecosystem will experience substantial changes which require careful governance. Five specific recommendations related to technology, regulation, skills and human-centredness are made, which will not only serve the 6G ecosystem but can also become a blueprint for addressing other technological and societal challenges at national and international stage.
