Our Global Industry Standards Contributions

3GPP - TS 23.501

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is composed of more than 700 industry partners, making it the largest standards body shaping the £-trillion telco market.

Our research on converged telco architectures is being integrated into 3GPP with the support of our industry partner. The standards contributions underpinned by the research have been fed directly into current Release 17 3GPP TS 23.501.

Specifically, we delivered Sections 4.2.10. (Architecture Reference Model for ATSSS Support) and 5.32 (Support for ATSSS) as well as 3GPP TS 23.502 Section 4.22 (ATSSS procedures).

NGMN - 6G USE CASES

The NGMN Alliance (Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance) is an international forum founded by world-leading mobile network operators. It has played a pivotal role in defining 4G and 5G. It has already published a White Paper on "6G Drivers and Vision".


We are currently contributing to a new White Paper on 6G use-cases (exact title tbc) which will likely be published early 2022. In that paper, we take a use-case centric approach to understand what technology enablers are required for 6G. The paper is industry-driven, and likely to impact R18 of 3GPP standardisation on 6G.

ETSI - PERMISSIONED DISTRIBUTED LEDGERS

ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is one of the largest standardisation organizations in the field of information and communications. It invented 2G and has been instrumental to the growth of telecoms and the Internet of Things.

We are the co-founders, rapporteurs and contributing member of the Permissioned Distributed Ledgers (PDL) working group. We believe that blockchains will play an instrumental role in 6G and are thus contributing in terms of architectures, protocols, offline operations mechanisms, etc.

IEEE - P1918.1 TACTILE INTERNET

The IEEE is the world's largest engineering society and responsible for many important standards. We are the cofounders, chairs, rapporteurs and contributors of the IEEE P1918.1 Tactile Internet standard.

This standard defines a framework for the Tactile Internet, including a reference model and architecture, which defines common architectural entities, interfaces between those entities, and the mapping of functions to those entities.


It provides a baseline for a pioneering range of further standards that will be created under this working group realizing the key necessary technical capabilities of the Tactile Internet, underpinned by 5G, 5G+ and 6G.

3GPP AMF - OAI IMPLEMENTATION

The Core Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) is part of the 3GPP Architecture. Its primary tasks include: Registration Management, Connection Management, Reachability Management, Mobility Management and various function relating to security and access management and authorisation.

King's is member of the Open Air Interface Alliance, an alliance working on open source implementations of 3GPP-compliant air-interface, RAN and Core Network implementations. Our R16 AMF implementation was recently merged into the operational code.

NGMN - GREEN FUTURE NETWORKS

We contributed to the first White Paper resulting from the NGMN Green Future Network project. It introduces the subject of sustainability in mobile networks and provides context of this broad and complex topic.


The background, measurement and sector targets for greenhouse gas emissions impacting climate change are described, along with the exploration of renewable energy as a key strategy for service providers to tackle emissions, high level Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the environmental performance, standardization work, energy efficiency in networks, as well as operator and vendor net-zero initiatives.
