6G Futures is providing global leadership in 6G research, innovation and up-skilling. It consolidates the UK’s position at the forefront of next generation mobile networks design.

The world-class centre draws on a strong history of collaboration and pioneering work between the University of Bristol and King’s College London.

With a world-class track-record in end-to-end tech delivery, we pioneer novel 6G protocols, technologies and architectures.

We prototype promising 6G solutions and contribute to global standards. We  also ensure cutting-edge upskilling and strong collaboration with global industries and academia.


We place a strong focus on responsible innovation and societal impact; and we contribute to policy discussions.

“As adoption of 5G accelerates around the world, it’s important the UK is prepared for 6G as the next generation mobile technology. The creation of this centre is a notable moment for the UK technology sector. We will be developing novel architectures, incorporating federated exchange and self-synthesising mechanisms, advance the internet of skills, and embed blockchain, quantum and federated AI technologies. But it’s not just pure tech - we’ll be working on co-creation with verticals toward some truly exciting and societally impacting use-cases, while contributing to policy, alliances and global standards.”

"Integrating very advanced technologies, such as LiFi of which I am the inventor, presents a unique opportunity for 6G to become more affordable whilst delivering significant performance improvements over 5G. We are excited to be part of the 6G Futures initiative and will be contributing in terms of design and - importantly - engineering prototypes which we hope the industry will pick up to deliver a powerful 6G system. Our current use-case prototypes, used e.g. at Strictly Come Dancing, will hopefully be mainstream as part of the 6G technology portfolio."
